Somerby of Alpharetta Resident Says Giving Back Is In Her Nature
6/2/2009
Today's Older Adults Prove They Are Vital Part of Any Community
ALPHARETTA, GA: When it comes to staying active, 82-year old Arline Bloom is a prime example. Although she is retired, this Somerby of Alpharetta resident is far from inactivity when it comes to helping others. Bloom works the phones as a volunteer with the Clark Howard radio show on WSB in Atlanta. She takes great pride in her weekly three-hour shift where she assists callers with their consumer advocacy issues.
May is Older Americans Month, a time designated by the President to pay tribute to the growing population of seniors 65 and better and their valuable contributions to our culture. According the U.S. Census Bureau, Bloom is among the nearly 945,000 Georgians in that age category, many of whom are still very engaged and vital in their communities.
“I average about 30 calls during my shift which I’ve been doing for 12 years now,” said Bloom. “I really enjoy doing this and if I can help someone, maybe even help them save money, then I know I’ve done something right.”
That drive and commitment to help is noticed by others at Somerby of Alpharetta. Bloom also enjoys volunteering at the Fox Theater in downtown Atlanta where she’s been an usher for 28 years. She also uses her former nursing career in assisting friends with health questions and issues.
“Mrs. Bloom is just one of the many residents here at Somerby that steps in to help in a variety of ways,” said DeAnn Young, Somerby of Alpharetta director of marketing. “We witness first-hand how older adults, not only here, but throughout the city, volunteer their time and talents. It’s nice to have at least one month set aside to recognize all these active adults do for us.”
And the number of individuals in that age bracket continues to grow. The U.S. Census Bureau reports the 65+ population in the United States accounts for nearly 38-million people and will increase to more than 88 million in the next 40 years. People are living longer and healthier lives with a life expectancy of 78.
“I admit I like my quiet time, but staying active keeps me both physically and mentally fit,” added Bloom. “I know I’m healthier as a result and staying busy is something I enjoy.”
